Sessione 15 – Industrial relations in transition(s): (post)pandemic challenges, environmental crises, and technological change

Session organizers: Lisa Dorigatti (Università di Milano), Guglielmo Meardi (Scuola Normale Superiore), Roberto Pedersini (Università di Milano)

The world of work finds itself in a phase of significant change and transformation. The pandemic crisis, climate change, and technological innovations all push to unprecedented transformations, which entail significant socio-political challenges. Each of these will affect and will be impacted by industrial relations. The session calls for contributions examining the role of industrial relations processes and actors in influencing different types of transitions connected to the world of work and their outcomes, both in Italy and abroad. Possible topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • The influence of the social partners on the management of the pandemic crisis and the impact of industrial relations institutions on its socio-economic consequences: how far have social partners been able to influence government’s responses to the pandemic crisis and policymaking aimed at fostering recovery (notably the national recovery plans)? With which effects for different groups of people and social inequalities?
  • The role of industrial relations in processes of technological change and innovation: Are industrial relations actors involved in the adoption of new technologies at work? With what effects for working people and their employment conditions? To what extent do different industrial relations models promote or hinder technological innovation? Is technological change affecting collective action and collective bargaining and how?
  • The role of industrial relations actors in fostering or hindering responses to the environmental crisis: What role are industrial relations actors playing in ensuring a just transition and what are the dilemmas they are facing? How do industrial relations institutions influence restructuring processes connected with environmental concerns?

The session is open to different methodologies and to contributions both in Italian and English. Contributions adopting a comparative perspective are particularly welcome.
